Capital gains tax shares calculator

Sell shares or another asset held outside your own trading business and part of the gain goes to tax. Put your numbers in and see what is likely to be left before you plan what to do with it.

How this calculator works

  • Enter what you paid for the shares or asset, what you sold them for, and the buying and selling costs.
  • Add your other income for the year, because that is what decides which rate the gain is taxed at.
  • The result shows the gain left after the annual exempt amount and the tax that sits on it for 2026/27.

What it cannot see

It only knows what you type in. It cannot see losses carried forward from earlier years, reliefs that apply when the shares are in your own trading company, or who else owns part of the holding. It does not know how you pay yourself either, so dividends taken later in the year can push the gain into a different band. The date you sell also changes the answer.

Check your own position before you sell

A few quick questions about the company, how you pay yourself and where the records stand, and Crosby comes back with a recommendation. If there is a fit, the next step is a free growth review where your tax position for the year ahead is gone through properly.
